Lots of wealthy and entitled kids. Easy transition from private school. Worse location than Bowdoin or Bates.
You are clearly someone who has never been to Lewiston or Waterville.
We visited all 3 Maine schools over a couple of days, and Colby is in the middle of nowhere. Bates and Bowdoin are about 45 min from Portland (a great city!), and kids at both schools mentioned going there pretty often, and one tour guide had an internship there during the school year. They both are also within easy driving distance of the ocean.
I agree. My DS liked all three schools but liked Colby’s location the least. Colby reps talked a lot about the “Colby experience“ and never mentioned Waterville. DS liked the idea of being closer to Portland and the connection between Bates and the city of Lewiston. In the end the three schools are similar and it should be about the best fit for your kid. For mine that’s Bates but I think DS would have been happy at Colby as well.
Had to be a while ago I’d think, or just a fluke. Colby is extremely committed to the town. They’ve spent millions there recently.
It was this summer. Could it have been a fluke? Sure, but we went on a tour, talked to several students and saw little connection to Waterville. Yes, Colby has invested a lot of money in Waterville but the campus felt isolated from the town to us. And spending money does not equate to a student connection to the town, either. That was our experience and what led DS to choose Bates instead. Everyone can have their own experiences and opinions.
Yes everyone can have their own opinions — but not their own facts. If by isolated you mean “up the hill” well than most colleges are isolated.
Well then its a good thing that we aren't talking about most. We are talking about Colby, Bates and Bowdoin. There aren't too many kids walking "down the hill" to downtown Waterville from Colby's campus. And the students that live in the downtown dorm actually apply to live there specifically because of a desire for more community engagement. This is part of Colby's recognition of a lack of connection and their efforts to reinvigorate downtown Waterville. But you go ahead and do you.
