Please, please, please go to a professional bodypiercer, who - unlike Claire's, mall kiosks, or even your pediatrician - is actually licensed and regulated for exactly this procedure: body piercing. Piercing guns cannot be sterialized in an autoclave the way needles can, and also cause much more trauma and damage than a hollow piercing needle does. Any reputable piercing shop will be sanitary, professional, and understanding, and your kid will not be their first underage client and will not be faced with pictures of naked lades (all you pearl-clutchers clearly have never been to a piercing shop). - Mom who got her first ear piercings done by a gun but all subsequent ear and other body piercings done by needle and actually knows what I'm talking about.
The guns are single use and absolutely come sterilized. Then thrown out. It was totally fine for both my kids.
I had all of my ear piercings done at a Claire's/Piercing Pagoda, and they were fine, only a small infection on one of the non-primary holes Claire's did - but I will not be taking my daughter there because professional needle piercing is safer and a better method. The gun shoots a sharpened piece of metal through the ear; the needle hollows out a small tunnel for the earring. I'd also rather have a professional piercer do the work than a retail worker who only receives company training and probably spends more time on the register than piercing ears. Gun piercings can work just fine, but I don't think it's worth the risks.
