Why doesn't US Soccer rack and stack all the leagues top to bottom and use promotion/relegation. I don't care which is on top, DA or ECNL, but if you finish in the bottom 3, the next league down gets to top 3 teams promoted. Something to that effect. So in our area... DA ECNL EDP CCL ECNL Regional ....
That actually is what US Soccer wants. In its mind, ECNL is tier 2 and is a feeder for the DA. But ECNL says no thank you and is fighting becoming tier 2, although it is slowly happening anyways. That is one thing that hurts our system: no one wants to be a feeder. It's partially a money issue. In other countries, the feeders are paid when their players are picked up from the higher tiers.
Awww. Poor us soccer is having trouble just getting what it wants. Why oh why could that be?
US Soccer is already achieving that, even without the ECNL's cooperation. And the ECNL wasn't some perfect organization prior to the DA anyways. It will just happen differently. The ECNL is already helping US Soccer by watering itself down and doubling the number of ECNLs in NOVA from just 2 years ago.
ECNL is a soccer county club for affluent kids and us soccer is the same. Would be a tough call to choose which one is better or worse since they are basically the same in spite of your constant hard sell.
As somebody whose son is likely to decide against DA (even if he could make it, which is highly uncertain), I look at ECNL options exactly the same way. Nothing screams privilege like requiring kids to have parents spend thousands of dollars flying to play other clubs on the east coast when they could play comparable clubs right here. The financial commitment is an obvious barrier to entry and almost guarantees a much higher likelihood that a wealthier kid is likely to make that team vs. trying out at a really good club that plays locally. I understand why things are different on the girls side in ECNL. On the boys side, it looks absolutely like a country club, or like developing your kid to be on the varsity sailing or polo team as a way to get into a college they could not otherwise get into.
Boys have funded DAs so there is no comparison to the girls side. On the girls side, the two so called "national leagues" are quite similar so just choose the quality offering near your player if you can afford the time and money. If you can't, no one cares about your player. Cash is king for girls.
Most DAs are not funded, so for most DA players, it's the same situation.
The difference is having several dozen fully funded das will put dozens of top teams at the top of the league. That helps to make league competitive in areas where there are several of these fully funded teams in a conference. Imo, if the gda had as many fully funded gdas on the girls side, it could have a similar effect.
It wasn't in the beginning. This is 10 years later. It will take time. The LA Galaxy DA is full funded. But in any case, the funding is because of the MLS. The NWSL is struggling to survive. But the answer to all of that is to connect the two leagues. Pair the NWSL teams with MLS teams.
People spend their hard earned cash where they think it suits their player best. If in the future that is gda or ecnl or some other place, then that is what they will buy. Right now, they buy gda if that is the best choice or ecnl if that is the best choice. They don't care about the brand in my experience unless they have to choose one or the other to get an offered iID opportunity like ynt or id2 or pdp or something like that.
As far as funding goes, the MLS is more lucrative than the NWSL. We aren't talking about the parental portion. When BDA teams are funded, it is because of the MLS. The NWSL is not anything close to the MLS (which since the MLS is pretty pitiful, that's sad). To help the NWSL with longevity and funding, it needs to pair up with the MLS. That isn't necessary given how much more lucrative the WNT is, but that's just reality.
