CCL has not been the same since the Richmond clubs left years ago over the "top teams" rule. It was VCCL back then and they changed the name when they rebranded without that rule when the Strikers/Kickers departure made them realize no ECNL or DA club was going to put their top team in CCL instead. At that point it was a Northern Virginia league with the added bonus of travel to Virginia Beach and Roanoke and the clubs were stupid to remain. If the TDs ever catch on that parents hate driving to Roanoke and Virginia Beach for games when there are plenty of equally competitive teams right here that will be the end of CCL. Surprisingly it hasn't been the horrible structure of CCL which has caused it's current downfall, it was US Soccer starting girls DA to compete with ECNL and ECNL adding boys in retaliation. There are currently more teams playing in DA and ECNL from this area than there were in WAGS D1 before CCL started. It's the exodus of so much local talent into these disastrous regional leagues which has killed CCL, NCSL and the other local leagues.
I don’t know, I think CCL is more of a disastrous league than DA and ECNL. NCSL was/is fine, but never had a good plan for club concerns - it is a team centric model. ECNL killed WAGS (GDA wasn’t around yet). Both ECNL and GDA realized that to have a club centric model and get high levels of competition, you need to expand the geographic region. CCL’s region is never going to be large enough to force a top teams only club rule and provide enough competition for the larger clubs. CCL has run its course and it’s just a cash cow for a couple of folks. Besides, travel for some of these ‘regional’ leagues is often better than CCL.
