Optimal roster sizes at U13 in general are around 15. Injuries are not as much a concern and in a full field transition year kids need lots of playing time. As kids get older roster sizes expand to 18 and beyond.

This is not really a DA or ECNL thing but a good way of handling U13.

15 players is ideal.  Otherwise, several of the players will not get adequate playing time.  I would even go down to 13 or 14 at U13 as the injuries are not as bad yet, outside of the growth issue.  The only reason to increase roster size as they get older is because of injuries.

As kids get older, substitutions are strategic.  At the younger ages substitutions are just random to give kids playing time.[/quote]
