Oh no, because of those crazy bikers, my trip to Starbucks took an extra minute or two - what insensitive jerks! How dare they use public roads -- which their taxes support -- to have some fun and get some exercise. What's the point of having this expensive SUV if I can't drive it as fast as I want, wherever I want, and whenever I want - including the handful of roads in the area that I know are popular with cyclists. Something should really be done about this!
No, nice try. It's not about this -- it is about the fact that they are endangering lots of people and not obeying any rules of the road. Frankly, even if they have antipathy toward the car-driving public (which, your post strongly suggests is the case), do they not fear for their own safety? All it takes is a pebble in the road/uneven or wet surface/ etc. for a bike to slip right into that car that is stuck trailing him for miles (unable to pass on the winding road). Also, if they are so intent on being treated as vehicles (their legal right to use the public roads, etc.), then how about the equivalent of auto-insurance for bikers, or bike-licenses (along with all the fees MOCO likes to collect when registering a car). We drivers must maintain auto-insurance as part of our rights/responsibility to share those very same roads; we must pay a lot of money to register our cars. Our insurance is a financial burden but comes in handy if we have or cause an accident; our car registration revenues are used to maintain the roads. How about tax-happy-Montgomery-County establish a new "bike insurance and registration mandate" to insure that these bikers have some of those pesky responsibilities -- just like the rest of the vehicles that they so routinely inconvenience. Hmmmm, what a great idea. I bet there are a LOT of drivers that would support such a move.
