It's always "calmer" when the other spouse is away because the at home spouse gets to do their own thing. How would you feel if your spouse left and never came back?
Yes, this is true. When one of my children is away I feel as though I can totally get along with the remaining child because I'll do whatever they like, no trying to balance wants, needs, desired. No fighting. Same with a spouse. I like when my spouse is gone. No pressure to be hugged. Less laundry. Quiet in the house. But ... nobody tall to get the pans that are up high, I have to make every meal, and if there is physical problem with the house (clogged toilet? leaky faucet?) I have to deal with it myself. (yes, of course I can. But I like it when DH deals with the plumbing, ok? So sexy, so manly. Ha, ha, just kidding I just don't want to deal with anybody's shit) And to the PP who mentioned being scared, yes, I agree, the creaks of the house can freak you out when you are alone. It doesn't for me any more (DH goes away enough that I'm immune) but I remember the first time feeling lonely and a little bit afraid. Yes, as a woman we have a heightened sense of fear and vulnerability. We are more vulnerable. It's relaxing to have DH away. I hope that I'll always appreciate when he returns.
