Answer me this: According to the Office of Planning, DC has 96,250 school-age residents. According to the DME, between DCPS and charters there are 91,484 public school students. Enrollment data from private schools show that roughly 5% of DC kids go to private school. So if there is widespread fraud, where are the kids? The only explanation I can think of is that an equivalent number of kids are fraudulently going to school in Maryland.
+1.
5,500 of the students at DCPS and Charters are labeled as adult or alternative learners (who may be school age students), so you can’t crosswalk between the two number you cite.
But if some adults are included in the student count then it would only mean that the number of students is being over-counted, the actual number of school-age students would be less. The point is, if -- as some have claimed -- 10-20% of the public students in DC were out of state residency cheaters, there would be 10,000 or 20,000 more students than residents. But there aren't.
Agree with the bolded. I think it is quite possible that 10% of students in certain schools could be residency cheaters, but that does not mean that there are 10,000 Maryland or VA residents in DC schools.
