Nothing is impossible to walk if the person wants to do that.  [b]But data show that people consider walking distance to a regular commute to be 10 minutes or under.[/b]  This journal article says walking distance is often considered to be less than 1/4 mile.  You are not going to find those distances to metro in the Whitman district.

OP should just go to the track and walk a mile, and figure out how much of that OP is willing to do on a daily basis, both ways.  And then decide.   A mile would be fine for me to avoid having to drive, but it makes a 18-20 minute metro commute closer to 40-45 minutes, but think of all the health benefits![/quote]
