People always sat out on their porches or their stoop, so even if someone came along who looked like they were up to something, the other neighbors would quickly intervene. A lot of them usually belonged to churches and were on the "sick and shut in" list, so congregation members would stop by from time to time especially around the holidays, Palm Sunday, or to take them communion.
