Lots of good points, but doesn't all come down to why they (kids) do it? Play and see friends, make the pros, just for fun, please their parents, list goes on and on. The why should dictate the how and that is where things get tangled between the player and the parent. Of course we all want to win, of course we all want our kids to be the best, of course there is politics. Like the OP, I was in a similar situation a few years back reflecting on the time lost and money spent. I would not do anything differently, ultimately my son was able to play at a very high level with friends he had made (some since U6). Travel soccer forced some critical developmental skills into his life such as time management, problem solving by team, healthy living, and even politics. All of which helped him in college and now in his young professional life. There will always be a new DA, a new CCL, etc. These are nothing more than products which are marketed to address a perceived gap in the business. If your child is enjoying practice and his/her team is playing among comparable skilled teams then you should stick to it, don't go chasing the next big thing, you will be chasing forever and loose out on establishing long term friendships that last way beyond the pitch. I overheard my eldest son talk to my daughter who is playing at U15, many of her friends had left the team for other sports/clubs. He asked her a simple question, "either you do this for your team or you do it for yourself, I think you should do it for yourself" She opted to stay with her current club/coach and a handful of her old teammates that was chasing the DA route came back. Step back ask the players for once, we all had our shot.
