I went to Syracuse University and LOVED it! I had an excellent education. Obviously you do not choose to go here for the city of Syracuse. People have different preferences and reasons for why they choose a particular school. Syracuse University was my very first choice because it is large, relatively self-contained campus-based, fun, social, sports-oriented (Carrier Dome) and tons of school spirit. For me, If I had wanted a great city school then I would have chosen a place like NYU, but that is not my scene.
From the perspective of someone who's used to big, grungy cities, is Syracuse really that bad?
I went to Syracuse and although I wasn't ever really a fan of the city of Syracuse, I thought it was better than going to school in a small town (which I also did). Syracuse isn't a cute/pretty city/town but it's still a city, so there's more to do than a small town (like compared to even Blacksburg, Williamsburg or Charlottesville). It isn't maybe "cute" like Williamsburg or Charlottesville but I remember going to minor league baseball games (ok so not major league), theater (although nothing like the Kennedy Center), clubs ... It also is nearby really beautiful outdoors (lakes). I also remember taking day trips to skiing. As for the price and whether it's worth it, that depends on what $70k means to you. I will say that the student body is overwhelmingly wealthy kids. Lots of very rich kids from Long Island. If you're a middle class kid from middle America, you probably wouldn't fit in.
