What do we put on the application? Child wants to include all three and identifies as all three. Parent that is 1/2 Latino and 1/2 Middle Eastern feels that is disingenuous. Thoughts?
This is an interesting question. Do you consider your child white? Also, it sounds like as a parent you identified with your 1/2 Latino and 1/2 Middle Eastern background. How much was passed along to your child? I ask this because private school applications aside, my children are bi-racial (African American and white) and by looking at them it is obvious they have mixed heritage. For this generation they identify as bi-racial but if they end up marrying someone white, it would feel weird to me for my grandchildren to be white. I would say that they need to be what they identify consistently in all situations. Would they (when dating online some day) still identify the same even if that means there are people that say they would never date someone of x ethnicity? Would they still use a Middle eastern or Latino name on a job application knowing that could cause someone to screen their name out of the pile? If they really feel a connection to those parts of their heritage and are consistent in proclaiming it (not just when convenient), I would say that as a parent you can help bridge the authentic connection with grandparents heritage.
