My family will be attending the information session tomorrow night at the Rockville MC campus. My understanding is that this is a version of dual enrollment. The students take all their courses at Montgomery College and receive both credits toward high school graduation AND credit toward an associates degree at the same time. To the poster who asked why a kid would want to do this, the reason we are considering it is that most of the courses offered at our son's high school are not challenging enough. He is in two AP courses this year (AP Calculus and AP Comp Sci Principles) and doing well in both. The AP Calc class is really the only one that feels the right balance of challenging and interesting for him this year. Chemistry, English, History.. even the AP Comp Sci Principles courses are all very easy/boring to him. We are looking at the Math concentration offered at Rockville's campus: https://catalog.montgomerycollege.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=9&poid=2303&returnto=1840 This shows recommended courses: https://montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/curriculum/partnerships/Dual_Enrollment/Science%E2%80%93Mathematics%20Track%20AS%20-%2003.15.2018%20.pdf I had not realized this was the first year that this was being offered across the county. I would love to find students who have already participated in something like this at MC.
I would encourage your son to meet with his counselor for more guidance on APs. Some (like comp sci principles/environmental science ie) are known to be less challenging. Physics C, AP Chem, Multivariate Calc...these are the challenges. He can build a challenging schedule with AP classes.
