Our DD has higher stats, but also seeks that rare bird of a LAC in or near a city and these were the ones that we thought were excellent schools that she feels confident she could get into. (Her top choices are Haverford/Swarthmore near Philly but those are reaches for anyone! ) Ohio: Denison (I don't think it's a stretch if GPA is uw--SAT scores are high for the school) and Case Western --in towns, but close to Columbus (pop 800K+) MI: Kalamazoo -- within the city of Kalamazoo (pop 75k+) ( next to Western Michigan University). DD LOVED this school/city. MN: Macalester (this would be a genuine reach) NY: Skidmore (maybe a reach) Saratoga Springs pop 25K+
1310 SAT is below the average at Denison, which is 1330. My DC just graduated from there. OP's DC might have a chance for admission, but merit aid would be limited.
Another (happy) Denisonian parent here. I think it depends on the sex of the applicant. My DS was awarded 26k in merit with a 3.55/ 30 ACT, my DD a year later was awarded 20k with a 4.0 UW and a 1550 SAT. At some level I think my daughters stats hurt her and it has become more selective but if OP's child is s DS I think they have shot. The boys do much better.
Your daughters credentials/award just ruined my night. So much for the Denison safety! :-(
PP posted here. Not my intent and if you check College Confidential you will see other DD with stats that are not as competitive as my DD were awarded larger merit from Denison. This is not meant as a humble brag because my DD would have attended (my DS does and is very content there) but we suspected that given her stats and her list of other schools to which she applied Denison may have felt that she wouldn't have attended so they were cautious in what they awarded my DD. And yes we were disappointed because we had (secretly) hoped she might have a shot at a full tuition award but it wasn't meant to be. That said my DS was kinda glad lol... I do think Denison is doing a lot right, it's trending well in the rankings and it's known for giving merit so I am not surprised that it is seeing an increase in applicants and their overall stats of those students is becoming more competitive. Our family also has had very positive experiences with Hobart William Smith. If your DC can deal with the winter it's worth a look. Very pretty site overlooking one of the Finger lakes. My son chose Denison over Hobart mainly because of the major. My DD did earn some nice awards from schools like Tulane, Lafayette, Fordham and Hobart William Smith so I think the schools know what they are looking for and when they find it they can be aggressive in their offers. Good luck to you and your family.
