I have a 2008 Ford Escape. I've done nothing to it but oil changes and fixing one AC part that is about $10. It has 199,000 miles on it.
I have a 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid and it had no problems other than a part recall for the 12 years and 150K miles. Just after 150K, the electronic component that controls the power steering failed. The repair would be about $3300 and the car is only valued around $3800, so it seemed foolish to repair. The dealer said that he's seen this component go out at 100K and some that have not gone out at 250K. I've been driving the car for the last 6 months without power steering and other than that, it's still fine. And I've been getting 28-31 MPG for the life of the car. They discontinued this car about 4 years ago, but my SIL bought a 2014 C-Max and she is very happy with it. They've taken the car on several road trips, one of which toured the country when my BIL was on a sabbatical from his job. He went from Oregon to California, to Arizona, Texas, Tennesse, the Carolinas, up to our area, up to New England and then back across the northern states. He took about 3 months to do it and the car was great. They've had no maintenance other than standard wear and tear (tires, oil change) and it gets better gas mileage than my Escape gets. I'd replace mine with a C-Max, but I need to get an optional 3rd row, so I'll be looking to upgrade mine to a Toyota Highlander hybrid next year.
