Instead they are in a generalized state of hyper vigilance/hyper arousal. Doing things in that state can be challenging, but it doesn’t mean that they are afraid of the specific thing they aren’t able to do. For example, let’s imagine that there is someone you idolize, maybe you are a cellist and Yo Yo Ma is your hero. You are invited to a master class with him. It starts with a reception, but you are too nervous to eat so you mingle with a glass in hand. You aren’t scared of the canapés. You aren’t scared of Yo Yo Ma.
