This is definitely a mystery.  The mom always seemed to be reading a magazine.  But, the missing parents both died -- it's mentioned in the pilot (which didn't air very often).  Still, weird that they never talked about their dead parents -- if the show had been made 10 yrs later they'd probably have dealt with it in multiple "very special episodes".  [/quote]

No, they had both definitely died. It was mentioned in the pilot episode, as mentioned above. And I believe it was mentioned briefly again in one of the first season episodes. I

think the ideal was that the deaths had happened long enough ago that the kids had grieved and were ready to move on. You know, you weren't supposed to wallow in your feelings back then. Just buck up and keep a stiff upper lip.
