My son gets SSI, but he's 10, ASD, & non verbal. It was a pain in the ass getting him on SSI, and it's a pain in the ass every time I have to contact someone at their offices (limited hours and no email). But I'm poor so it does help us out some. It also helps that he's already in the system, because frankly, unless something drastically changes, he won't be capable of living independently after 18. If your child is pretty high functioning, needs minimum support/therapies, and you make a comfortable living, I wouldn't bother. If you know your child isn't ever going to be mainstreamed, it's worth a look.[/quote]
