Anxiety is a normal and helpful feeling, like stress, that one should not attempt to get rid of. Work instead on the reaction to those feelings. Indeed, they can be performance enhancers.
Like a lot of people who never had to deal with serious mental illness themselves or with a family member, you have no idea what you are talking about.
Anxiety is not a serious mental illness. It is a normal emotion. Like happiness, sadness, contentment, doubt.
This person has no idea what he or she is talking about. My child has been diagnosed with anxiety, dyslexia, Asperger's, dysgraphia, and ADHD. My child's anxiety has caused the most problems on a day to day basis. I would suggest a therapist (LCSW or psychologist) first for insight on whether a psychiatrist should be consulted (for a possible prescription in addition to CBT or other appropriate therapy).
We have an appointment with a psychiatrist for the official diagnosis (and incase meds were needed we figured this was a good place to start). I mentioned to my 6 year old last night about seeing the doctor (just talking, no shots or anything) to help her not feel so sad and scared all the time, and her response was "but i have to be sad and scared, that's who I am". Breaks my heart. Kicking myself we didn't get this process started sooner but at least we are doing it now. - OP
