I mentioned it to one of my Russian friends, laughing at myself for being so silly about a building (and one which looks almost exactly like a couple other buildings in Moscow), and my Russian friend said "Well, that makes sense.  They used to use it for interrogations when Lubyanka prison was full or they didn't want to take them there."  I've never been able to confirm that, so I don't know if my friend was pulling my leg, but they seemed to be serious (and were close enough to the dissident movement to maybe know).

It might just be that the hotel is big and sort of blocks the sun when you're standing in front of it.  But it felt like bad mojo.  It's a fancy Radisson now!
