When my sister died after a long illness that began when she was still a kid, I began finding pennies everywhere. There would be nothing in a particular spot, I would leave for a few moments, come back, and lo and behold, there was a penny in that spot where there had been nothing a few moments earlier. I always did a double take and wondered if I had missed seeing the penny earlier. But it was happening all the time, not just those coincidental random pennies you find once in a while. The first Christmas two months after her death, I made a big gift basket arrangement for another sibling and wrapped it with shrink wrap so that it was enclosed. On the spur of the moment, I fashioned a big ribbon bow and taped it to the front of the basket on top of the shrink wrap. Then I drove to my parents' house to place the gifts under the tree. When I get to my parents' house I unloaded the gifts (Xmas Eve). Last to pick up was the gift basket, placed carefully on the car seat to avoid getting the shrink wrap messed up. It was dark outside, but even so, I realized something curious. The bow that I had placed on top of the cellophane shrink wrap was now tucked among the gifts inside the basket. Whaaat? I took the large basket into the house, my mind whirling. The bow was inside the basket, under the shrink wrap, unequivocally. I have no idea how that happened. Did a double and triple mental check, trying to remember if I might have placed it inside the basket and not outside the basket. Another layer to this story is that the sister who passed held a serious grudge against the sister who was receiving this basket. It was almost like a message to the gift recipient. I was careful to tell the sister about the ribbon, not sure if that was meant to be a message to her. I still don't know if maybe in the pre-Christmas rush I might have placed the bow inside the basket, but damn, it was an afterthought, done on the spur of the moment after the basket had been finished and shrink wrap applied. The following day the family was gathered around the living room opening gifts. Suddenly, twin toddler nephews pointed towards a corner of the ceiling and they both excitedly called out the name of the sister who had just passed away.
