I will agree with the premise of the OP that the country is obviously very divided, but if the PPs who think the midwest (in general) is culturally and politically aligned with (in general) the people who live on the coasts who have been vilified as elites by the likes of Rush Limbaugh for over 30 years, you are mistaken. The fact of the matter is that the coastal states are responsible for the overwhelming majority of the GDP in the country. It is also responsbile for much of the so-called liberal agenda which includes things like live and let live (ie gay marriage,) the value of a women's rights over a fetus rights, the idea that guns in dense urban environments are not the greatest idea and the concept that cities thrives when cultures intermix. As a former midwesterner, I get it on the whole idea that things are different in the midwest, but the idea that people who are embracing of other peoples and cultures mixing into the "traditional" white culture of America as a bad thing is just not what our country is about, yet it appears to be what Trumpism is about. Prove me wrong.
Actually, by pure percentages, most Americans support these ideas. The Americans in the midwest who disagree with these ideas are in absolute terms the minority. And yet they seem to dominate the politics of our country. This is a problem. Just like nearly 3 million people being disenfranchised from determining the president of the United States is a problem. And gerrymandering.
