Here you go:  Heavy rail and light rail are NOT the same for those of you yelling about Metro.  "Light rail has a 50% higher violent crime rate than heavy rail"

In addition, in the past two years alone there a several dozen articles detailing the influx of violent crime near light rail staions in these cities Phoenix, Portland, LA, Minneapolis, Seattle, Baltimore, Dallas and and St. Louis to name just a few.  A very small sampling:

To be fair, there are studies that find a "neutral" impact on crime or say that it is tough to say for sure. But each one also points out that how the crimes are reported is a problem in getting proper numbers. There is under reporting and crimes that occur in close by neighborhoods and not actually in the stations are not counted at all in most occasions.  But if you google, you will see hundreds of stories about light rail crime and the impact on communities all across the country.  Anecdotal but impactful.

Metro is also light rail.  Heavy rail is industrial rail traffic.

Not only does commuter rail NOT increase crime, it likely DECREASES crime by providing increased economic opportunity and survielance.

Seriously?  You have no idea what you are talking about.  Please do the minimum research.  Let's start with the FACT that Metro is heavy rail, not light rail.  There is a serious difference.

While PP is wrong about definitions (metrorail IS heavy rail)   he is correct that all existing studies show no increase in crime from transit, and none show an increase.   All the accusastions  (including the claim that light rail has a different impact than heavy rail) are anecdotal (I read the freakonimics piece, and it had no data- surprising for them).  [/quote]
