Your 13 year old who doesn't have SN is working on the times tables?
You are in the Special Needs forum, PP. My kid with dyslexia will still be working on the times tables when he is 13, and I expect you not to mock him for it.
Your child is SN with dyslexia. OP said that child does not have SN.
OP here. You are correct that my DD that is doing the times tables does not have SN. Do you know why my DD is doing the times tables? Full disclosure: I have a 6th grader with SN that uses a calculator because he doesn't consistently recall the times tables.
Yes, because you are improperly medicating her and aren't addressing the issues. If she is scared to sleep alone, something more is going on and what is it and how can YOU fix the situation.
OP again. She's not been scared to sleep alone since doing the times tables. Watching the scary movie at her friend's house stimulated her amygdala (look it up if you don't know what it is or what it does). During the day, when she's engaging other parts of her brain, the amygdala isn't active. At night, when she wants to sleep, the other parts of her brain aren't utilized which allows the amygdala to ramp up its activity. Given a number of rote mental exercises, DD chose to do the times tables - which engaged other parts of her brain and calmed her amygdala - which allowed her to fall asleep. Given what I know of anxiety, this makes a lot of sense to me and I see no reason to look any further. I'm happy to say DD not only has slept thru the night with only a nightlight on, she's also moved to the top bed in her loft! Our little dog has been sleeping with her younger brother! She feels so much better now that she's better rested. For those who have younger kids that don't know the times tables, you can do it with the alphabet - recite the alphabet naming animals or something they do know.
