Just to say that I'd be nervous about leaving any beagle mix in the back yard, unless you know very well that it's not a wanderer.

Also, this is not based on a beagle, but when our dog was a puppy we just used his regular kibble to train him.  He was so crazy to eat (as a puppy) that he would do anything just for a piece of kibble.  Then we just fed him that much less at dinner.  Way cheaper than treats, and not as fattening.  If you do need treats, I really liked the kind that looks like beef jerky, as I could break off incredibly small pieces and just give him tiny bits at once.
