OP doesn't even plan on living in Manhattan.  She's not from some wealthy family moving to the UES and purchasing a coop. She's talking Jersey.  She doesn't even know the names of the schools.  I didn't even grow up in manhattan and I know the names at least.  I doubt OP has the money or prestige to get her kids in such a school.   [/quote]

There's nothing wrong with New Jersey, but it's highly unusual to live in NJ and attend private schools in NYC.  For one thing, your paying high property taxes in NJ FOR private schools.  Also the commute into the city is hellish for a child to endure on a regular basis.  It simply doesn't make any sense.  Add on top of that the competition and prep needed to even get into one of these schools.  The kind of people who live in the suburbs are different than those who live in the city.  It's like moving to Gaithersburg and trying to send your kids to sidwell.

OP here. Thank you for not being judgemental. We actually live in the middle of DC currently, and DD has lived there since she's been born, so we're not suburban. And *IF* we lived in NJ, it would be[b] Hoboken (very urban and not Jersey-like whatsoever[/b]). I was pretty tired when I started this thread, so maybe I worded it incorrectly, so that's probably on me, however, I do have a good number of names so far, I just need help regarding which to try for, what's a good fit, etc. thanks for the info re the commute and property tax, jersey seems less attractive now.[/quote]

PP here.  I'm very familiar with Hoboken.  Your child would be the ONLY child attending one of these schools from hoboken.  First off, Hoboken is very young. It's just not somewhere you live and send kids to NY privates.   You also mention property taxes... NJ has some of the highest property taxes.  Worst state to choose if you're going to go private.  Really there are plenty of suburbs with fantastic public schools. VERY good public schools.  There are wealthy enclaves all over the tristate where kids attend public schools.  You either live in the city and go private OR live in the burbs and go public. You need to learn more about NY because your plan is nonsensical.  Also, most good schools in Manhattan are on the upper east or upper west.  Are you planning on taking the path to the NY subway uptown?  We are talking over an hour each way for your child to attend private school.  Your plan just doesn't make any sense.

We actually only thought of Hoboken because we have family friends there who send a daughter to school in NYC. Not a top 10, but a good school. Probably path. Although it's more likely we'd just live in manhattan [/quote]
