How do you go about making sure they never go without food or shelter without housing them or giving them money? Similar situation with sibling with mental illness, refusing counseling, freelancing/poor/in debt, etc. [/quote]

1) Do what you can to find publicly available resources
2) pay if needed for space in a shelter or halfway house facility
3) if you have enough advanced notice (as OP does), you might consider getting long-term care insurance to cover a future need for a nursing home).[/quote]
