Well, DCUMers in this forum can no longer say that the conservative thought is not represented on college campuses. Guarantee that what's going on this weekend at UVA will spread to other campuses....torches, confederate flags, and all.
The demonstration isn't coming from the UVa community, it's outside people coming onto campus to demonstrate. I think UVa is in the unfortunate position of being in a state where the politics are especially ripe for this sort of thing (red state turned purple because of the influx of Democrats into the state, conservatives feel like they're losing their state), and UVa is a flashpoint because there's so much old symbolism on the campus that calls to the white nationalists/white supremacists/miscellaneous bigots, but the area has become increasingly liberal so there's more of a push now to remove that symbolism.
UVA may be in the "unfortunate position of being in a state where the politics are especially ripe for this sort of thing" but don't forget that the majority of the student body comes from that state as well.
That is patently irrelevant.
If you say that the state is home to a bunch of hillbilly rednecks with far right tendencies and UVA draws the majority of its student body from said state then it is entirely relevant. Or do you think they only admit the same and decent Virginians? Based on recent events I'd say they admit a representative sample.
The organizer of the demonstration is a white nationalist, Jason Kessler. He graduated from the University of Virginia and lives in Charlottesville. Unfortunately, the apple didn't fall far from the tree. Granted, one rotten apple does not reflect the entire student body, just as UPenn graduate Donald Trump does not reflect the intellect of the the entire student body.
l Incorrect. The riot was organized by Spencer and David Duke. they are both in Charlottesville now. This has nothing to do with UVA. I was on campus yesterday. The students haven't returned and won't until the 19th. UVA did not anticipate the alt right groups to march on the lawn the night before. This was supposed to be an alt. right protest of the removal of the robert e lee statue in Emancipation Park by the Mall. The alt righters decided marching on the UVA the night before would make good visuals, which it did. There were only 200 of them. President Teresa Sullivan took what action she could being that UVA is a public university in the heart of Charlottesville. Fortunately, the protest today was at Emancipation Park, as it was supposed to be when originalll planned by Spencer.
No, you are incorrect. While the demonstration may have had nothing to do with UVA, Jason Kessler did organize this rally. No need to argue. I believe in links. http://www.nbc29.com/story/36115819/judge-grants-injunction-jason-kessler-can-have-unite-the-right-rally-at-emancipation-park
And Kessler did graduate from UVA.
