So has anyone ever tried what OP is desiring--a private school with small classes, great buildings, no financial aid and everyone pays $40k (or some other number)? Sort of like a Lexus but college version. Would the market buy into that? And if you already area a college how would you transition to this type of structure?
It will be interesting to hear if there's such an animal. VA state schools range $25-30K in-state, which was our benchmark. A private without merit for $40K would be a rare bird indeed. I guess the obvious answers are service academies, and there's Olin in MA for engineering which I believe is tuition-free. There may be some small, religiously affiliated private schools with large enough endowments to keep tuition down. A quick Google says Franciscan University in Ohio is $37K all in. University of Dayton, also Catholic, is a bit more but still right at that $40K mark. Mount Saint Mary's in MD is $50K but good with aid. Saint Mary's College of Maryland (public) seems to clock in at $40K OOS all in.
