Here's my experience for your male perspective.  Before DW, I was in a LTR with a great woman. We were great friends and good together.  The sex was fine, but at the time I considered it to be pretty boring and vanilla.  I certainly wished for more (variety and adventure, not necessarily frequency) during the time we were together.  We split for other reasons.

Fast forward 15 years and now I've been with DW for 10 years.  After all this time,  my ex GF still pops into my brain while masturbating occasionally.  Not often, but maybe once every month or two I'll relive something we did together in bed (or that time in the limo).  Stuff that I previously considered boring and vanilla but now doesn't happen with DW and I kind of miss those small things.  If you had asked me 15 years ago if I'd miss the sex with her I'd say no chance.
