Yes, but most dogs have a tell walk right before (plus you can tell before that because their glands swell up in preparation), it doesn't happen all of a sudden- pay more attention.  Plus, they tend to be creatures of habit and have areas where they prefer to poop- again be aware.  I walk my dog on the parking (area between the sidewalk and street) until she poops. (We also try to have be in "no man's land" at the time too), ONLY then can she walk or sniff in people's yards on the other side.
