Ammo, of course, is completely unregulated in terms of purchase. Dicks Sporting goods has them out in the isles and you just go and pickup whatever you need. Except for the 22lr, those they are keeping behind the counter because preppers would walk off with everything if they let them out.
There are age restrictions (Federal) for the purchase of ammunition. One must be at least 21 years old to buy handgun ammunition, and one must be at least 18 to buy rifle and shotgun ammunition.
This always came up when buying .22 for a plinker back when I was a teen. They'd ask if it was for a rifle or handgun...rifle was always the correct answer, lol.
I know others have posted rules already. I've done multiple purchases in VA as a VA resident. Typically this is what happens: I go to the store and say "I want this". They take my ID and run a background check. In the mean time, I am filling out a couple of forms, mostly with my personal information and attestation that I have not committed crimes, is deemed mentally incompetent, and etc, along those lines. After the background check comes back, the clerk checks my answers on the form and if everything is okay, I head to the cashier, and pay for the gun. A few minutes later I am out in the car with a new gun. The clerk would expect you to inspect the firearm but it's not a requirement. Ammo, of course, is completely unregulated in terms of purchase. In a nutshell..., you need to be 18 to purchase a rifle/shotgun and 21 for a pistol, have 2 forms of ID, clean background check, cash/credit card, and then off you go. Once I had to wait about an hour for the background check to clear (busy holiday weekend), but it's usually completed in the ten minutes that it takes for the dealer to prep the firearm. If something questionable (but not disqualifying) comes up on your background check, a VA state trooper will stop in to the store if they are local and available to verify, and then approve/deny in person. I'd recommend you take a concealed carry class even if you never plan to apply for the permit. It will cover everything you need to know to safely handle, maintain, and store your pistol. Better classes are offered south of Northern VA (Stafford, Fredericksburg, Richmond, etc.).
