Yet another racist incident at AU, this time banana peels hanging from noose-like strings. With major protests following (of course, idiotic AU admins double down on the stupidity by banning reporters from covering the protests). It seems like there is a major racism-fueled incident at AU every month. Which got me thinking: why are there so many racist incidents at AU? Is it because AU is a safety school for wealthy kids who are looking for a four year vacation in Spring Valley as opposed to an education? Is it because AU's students are looking for a commuter school experience in the big city? Is it the school's historic United Methodist background? I don't get it. AU seemed like a nice school, but now it seems like it's full of racist assholes. It's like the Baylor of DC.
I understand your frustration, but honestly the broad brush painting has to stop. AU is a large school. The school, or white students, should not be classified by the acts of a racist few. This is the same ignorant attitude folks apply towards AAs and other POC. When events like this happen, the natural reaction is for folks to become insular. It would be nice if the university, or student groups, could open things up for a moderated conversation on race issues. When we get away from the name calling/labeling, and start engaging each other constructively, enlightenment is possible. IMO, if you can't accomplish this at a university, which exists to promote enlightenment, then we are in big trouble as a society.
