She wasn't diagnosed with diabetes until she was in her 30's. It was a rare diagnosis because it was type I which is usually diagnosed in children. Unlike type II diabetes, type I is an autoimmune disorder where the body attacks its own pancreas. It's not caused by diet, exercise, or any other lifestyle behavior. Like others with type I, she had significant issues controlling her blood sugar and the disease took a large toll on her eyesight over time.
Yes, I know. Exercise is still important for managing Type 1 diabetes b/c you're more at risk for heart disease and stroke: http://www.webmd.com/diabetes/type-1-diabetes-guide/diabetes-complications-type-1#1 She did not actually known if she had JD or gestational diabetes that turned permanent:
You are mistaken. She said they didn't know if the diabetes caused the miscarriage or if the miscarriage caused the diabetes. Gestational diabetes is always type II. She knows she had type I which is autoimmune and is never temporary. Once the pancreas is gone, it's gone. Type II (including gestational diabetes) is caused by insulin resistance which can be more easily controlled through diet and exercise. All the diet and exercise in the world will not cause your pancreas to regenerate.
Type II is permanent. Diet and exercise may let you go without medication, but it's still permanent.
