Apparently having a good mix of both Democrats and Republicans in a state make it a "hotbed for alt-right thinking". Virginia is a purple state where our votes actually matter. It's diverse in it's population and gets on quite well while having a large mix of both left and right voters. Many counties/cities that go blue, many that go red and a few that change with each election. I have neighbors that voted both ways. Yes, I'm a person that can actually say that I know people that voted for Hillary AND people that voted for Trump AND people that voted 3rd party. Imagine that! Diversity! So glad I don't live in a bubble.
Virginia is two states (or Commonwealths). One is blue (northern) and one is red/gray (southern). There really is not a mixing. Take away, Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax and Virginia is just like one of the gulf southern states.
Please don't speak of that which you don't know. Counties/Cities outside of Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax (and Fall Church) that went blue for Obama in 2012: Albemarle Brunswick Caroline Charles City Charlottesville Chesapeake Covington Danville Emporia Essex Franklin City Fredericksburg Greenville Hampton Harrisonburg Henrico Hopewell Lexington Loudoun Manassas Manassas Park Martinsville Nelson Newport News Northampton Petersburg Portsmouth Prince Edward Prince William Radford Richmond City Roanoke City Staunton Suffolk Surry Sussex Westmoreland Williamsburg Winchester We are a solidly mixed state. NoVa runs more blue for sure, but it's not the only area of Va.
