Wins: Kids from all middle schools are now admitted. Kids from low-income families are no longer shut out.
Losers: Tenfold increase in kids returning to their base school. Mostly low income families from quota schools. 120 pt drop in PSAT scores. 50% drop in NMSF. Severe drop in SOL advance pass rates Lower grades. Less spectacular college admissions. Reinforcement of racism against Asians particularly Indians.
My kid is a sophomore at TJ. As a parent that went to HYPSM I get the strong feeling from TJ that they don't give AF about the kids. That's not what HYPSM is like. There is a ton of academic and social support. TJ needs to adapt. They haven't.
Also Bonabos was having parents read books telling us we needed to chill out about college admissions vs leaning into preparing kids for the process. College admissions of any kind isn't chill at all. That doesn't make these kids better prepared for the process.
She was the one who brought TJ to no.1
