A while back, but Gainesville had not one but 2 serial killers https://the-line-up.com/the-gainesville-ripper-terrified-the-university-of-florida?amp=1
I just listened to a 48 hours where a kid from Miami attending UFlorida was killed by a friend (non-student), within the last few years. And I remember the 1990s murder spree ar UFlorida because I was in college myself elsewhere and thought it was super creepy.
The UF student who was murdered was Christian Aguilar and his death had absolutely nothing to do with UF. The person who killed him was not affiliated w UF in any way and the murder did not take place at UF or even in Gainesville. It was a targeted crime committed by a jealous friend. So it really is not indicative of crime at UF. It was also in 2012, not within the last few years. Also, to the other PP, there haven’t been 2 serial killers at UF/in Gainesville. That one, Daniel rolling, killed 5 people back in 1990. That was obviously a horrific event in Gainesville but very rare and there have been no other serial killers there. In the article you linked it mentions Ted Bundy who killed students at FSU, not UF.
Aguilar was a student at UF living in Gainesville at the time of his murder. His family relocated from Miami to Gainesville until the time his body was found. It is true that his murderer was not a student, and dumped his body elsewhere. I’m not sure why that matters. The point is that crime occurs on all campuses, not just urban campuses.
And this crime didn’t occur on a campus anyway. Crime happens everywhere, urban and rural, on and off college campuses, in every part of the world.
