Is there any update on cause of explosion?
It was natural gas. There is no other reason why the suspect would have been shooting off a flare gun (which shoots flaming flares) inside his own house. This was a natural gas explosion.
News reports say that authorities had turned off the gasline to the house earlier in the standoff. Perhaps there was enough residual gas, though? The way that house exploded and collapsed I presumed this guy had some sort of stockpiled explosives.
That explosion was NOT a natural gas + atmospheric air in an explosive concentration type of explosion . I’ve seen many of those, and there is essentially no smoke produced by such combustion. There’s a quick surge of flame and expansion along a shock-front, then the fuel is consumed almost immediately. The smoke produced afterwards is from things ignited BY the explosion, which are then starting to burn and producing their own smoke. But there is NO smoke produced from a gas explosion itself. That explosion looked to me like a low explosive materials explosion. Lots of white smoke produced by the explosion itself. If I had to guess, I’d say maybe black powder or potassium perchlorate or some similar type of sulphur or potassium based explosive compound. It was very slow-acting, maybe even too slow for black powder. Could’ve been some kind of fireworks formulation of some kind. But it was NOT natural gas.
