Probably the evil step mother has been working in the background to keep step daughter out of her home as much as possible, and OP has not yet seen what she's doing. She stepped up the campaign against step daughter by seeking to sabotage relationship with doting aunt and uncle. OP is beginning to catch on, but not there yet.
