Can we choose a normal country like Denmark, Norway, France maybe for the next winter Olympics? Some place that actually appreciates the winter sports and would provide a lovely scenery and backdrop to the games, and would treat the athletes with respect? I remember as a kid watching Lillehammer and the beautiful villages they put together for those games. Canada did a beautiful job several years ago. What do we get with China? A giant ski jump with huge nuclear smokestacks and cooling towers in the background. Everything surrounding the ski slopes is brown and bare and ugly. There's no snow. No beautiful lakes. No wintery scenery. just awful. I feel bad for these athletes
No normal countries WANT the Olympics, because they are horrible and corrupt S shows. They want you to spend billions of dollars every time, and all of the data overwhelmingly show that the Olympics are often a net loss for the host country. The Olympics are dumb. That's why many totalitarian regimes are interested in the Olympics - they already run the country on tons of corruption. A few billion in investment is a small price to pay to project propaganda to the rest of the world. Totalitarian regimes use the Olympics to legitimize themselves. They don't care about the price and cost to their people.
+1. I’ve pointed this out before, but the “normal” countries who initially threw their hat in the ring for this Olympics all pulled out. It came down to Beijing and Almaty as the finalists. The demands on host countries and costs have become too big. Now, it’s in Milan next time and I believe e both Sweden and Norway are back in the running for 2030. But this is going to be an ongoing problem.
