I am a poll worker. This misunderstanding and confusion about voter ID drives me nuts. We already have voter ID. It's your signature. When you sign the voter rolls you are attesting your identity and right to vote. The only way to fake those votes is to forge hundreds and thousands of signatures, and do it so well that the forgeries pass the intense scrutiny of poll workers and poll watchers. Picture ID requirements will add literally NOTHING to election security. These proposals are just more fodder for the sheeple who have no idea how elections actually work and are therefore easy to lie to.
Then why do poll workers ask for ID? Also, could you clarify what you mean? I don’t sign anything when I vote. I’m not sure what you mean about checking for forgeries. Could you explain?
Same here. Never signed anything while voting, but was asked for my ID.
+2 The PPP is full of it. A signature isn't a form of ID. And I was also never asked to sign anything when I vote. What a crock.
Pollworker here. In the west coast state where I now live and work elections, we sign the voter roll when we check in at the poll or we sign the back of the envelope that we mail if the ballot is mail-in. Those signatures are checked against the signatures on file (collected during registration). The voter rolls and absentee ballot envelopes - which is where signatures are collected - are checked at the county elections office. Party observers (R&D and I think others that have qualified) monitor the signature checks and if the election official has any concern about a lack of match between the signature on file and the signature collected that election, they can discuss it with the observers who can argue for or against the signature. The election official then makes the call. (I believe they are also able to contact voters in follow-up but not super sure how that part happens.) After the polls close, staff at each poll must tally and trace each and every election material collected. The number of votes cast in person - the actual paper cards that the machine tallies - must match the number of signatures in the roll. Also - every hour the polls are open we mark the names of the voters who have come to the polls on a list that is then posted outside the polls for the public to see. At the end of the night, we post the completed list as well as a tally of all votes cast at that poll that day. Voters get a receipt/identification number that goes with their actual ballot. They can check online to see the status of their ballot. There are other protections in place too but I'm describing what's public information. And that is this: who you vote for is your business. That you voted is public information. Election officials work tirelessly to track every single vote and we know every voter. I'm not going to say there's never been a vote cast that shouldn't have been, but this notion that you can just dump thousands of anonymous ballots or fake someone's ballot - enough to actually turn an election - is ludicrous. If you genuinely believe it's possible to fake a bunch of votes where you live, please explain to me first exactly how votes in your county are collected and tallied. Don't just tell me how you think it "could happen," but demonstrate that you actually know with at least some degree of precision how your system works.
