So definitely would not send daughters to college in TX. Wondering if the parents of boys and the boys themselves would say the same. I expect fewer applicants to colleges/universities in that state this year. We’ll have to see by how much.
My son is at Rice, and I was happy that he picked someplace outside of the liberal coastal bubble even though I am very far to the left (and not in the DCUM "I'm as liberal as they come but [completely conservative statement proving they're not]" way). He has had a great experience there, and it sounds as though he is surrounded by a lot of great people, any of whom I would be happy to have as a guest, should they have any reason to want to visit DC. Even if they're pregnant! Why, I'd be happy to buy them a ticket! But it's not just the most recent guns-n-embryo legislation that gives me pause. It's the way the Texas lege devotes itself to making the state unsafe in other ways. The power grid fails, and Rice has its own generators, so it's OK. But kids at other colleges? Screwed. Climate change results in flooding, and Rice is on high ground, so it's OK. But other places? Screwed. COVID appears in wave after wave. Rice imposes rules to keep its community safe, and it works. But other places? Screwed. I don't want my kid to be less safe, but can you really be part of the community when your safety so often requires you to pull up the drawbridge?
