According to the Washington Post, DC had 200 homicides last year. This year it is on pace for 187 homicides, which is about a 6% increase. By contrast Montgomery County has already had as many homicides this year as all of last year and is on pace to more than double the number of homicides. https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/local/homicides/
6% DECREASE, not increase.
Uh.... DC homicides are up 23% from last year, not down...https://mpdc.dc.gov/node/197622
That is month-to-month data, which can show variability. Looking at the whole year, you see a different picture. 2020: 200 homicides (16.7 per month) 2021: 79 homicides (15.8 per month)
Crime is seasonal to some extent. The summer months are generally worse for both property crime and violent crime. That's the whole reason DC police website provides a year-to-date comparison with the previous year. But hey, if you want to do your own back of the envelope calculations that are less valid to make yourself feel better, go ahead.
