Just heard Syc and McLean are joining alliance/merger?
Alliance, not a merger. Club sends its best players to form ECNL team for ages U13-U19 for boys and girls.
Best SYC boys are not going to play ecnl. They would play mls next.
MLS Next is only for 2009, 2008 and 2007 boys. The rest of the club will be in Alliance. SYC will be recruiting for MLSnext so not sure how many of the SYC kids will be on MLSnext for those ages...
Based on this partnership it sounds like mls next will likely only be u13 and u14 so no 07s. U15s will have to go to dc United.
Any other club I would agree. You wouldn't go into this partnership if you were still trying to expand your MLSNEXT. However, SYC isn't the most stable club (a different league each year for the last several years), so maybe they are only going into this partnership for a year or two and then going to go onto something else. I can't imagine MLSNEXT granting anymore age groups after this partnership, however, so you are probably right.
It seems you’re missing the point - you recognize that the point of MLSNext is to grow into the youngest ages and not jump straight into the older years and hurt existing clubs or create crappier older teams right? Start at younger ages and expand as those teams age into older age groups and younger ages take their place until all ages are full.
I get that is what they were hoping for before, but if they were still hoping for that, why would they join this alliance to send their best players to a combined SYC/Mclean team to play in ECNL? Doesn't make any sense. Before with the DA, there were teams that only had younger age groups. The idea is you cast a wider net at younger ages and then have less teams at the older age group. The best from those clubs that only have the younger teams would then go play for the teams that do have the older age groups and those weaker players from those teams would be weeded out. I think SYC realized thy weren't getting older age groups and signed up for this so their top players would stay. This kind of defeats the point of MLS casting a wider net, so I wouldn't be surprised if they get kicked out of MLSNEXT all together.
I agree. It doesn't make any sense. 2009, 2008 and maybe 2007 best players will be in MLSNEXT but they will have many players from other clubs filling in. For the older boys, many top players don't care to do ECNL, the ones that did already left. The only strong teams right now are the 2004 and 2003. Still too many changes. Before LMVSC coaches and players took over, the club had Blue, Orange, White and Black teams but so many left. They don't have that many teams as it is to participate in so many leagues. MLSnext, CCL, EDP, ECNL, NCSL.... They only have 2 teams per age-- and the gap between both groups is huge at every age.
