Two theories on why he dropped Debbie. 1. Debbie's family was old. Cindy has 20-something kids. Peg has a 20-something daughter. Mel probably feels like his sons (18 and 20) fit more with women who have younger-adult kids/families. and 2. It wouldn't surprise me if Mel plans to pick Cindy (not that he's really commited to anything), and he felt that between Peg and Debbie, it would be worse to put Debbie through being rejected at the last rose ceremony vs. Peg. Given how Debbie was so traumatized by her last relationship, if he thought he's probably picking Cindy in the end, he might think that Peg could weather the rejection better than Debbie. Mel is very aloof. It was SO funny when Peg's daughter sat down with him and said "how are you feeling" -- Mel answers "Great!" Peg's daughter askes again (trying to get him to open up for real) -- "No, really, how are you feeling about my mom?" Mel: "Good." Way to go, Mel! He just doesn't have much emotional intelligence. So, sad for the final "winner" -- likely Cindy -- she's in deep and she's going to find out that Mel is fool's gold.
Look, I'm cynical but it wouldn't surprise me if Debbie has zero money. She's never been married, and even semi-successful fitness instructors have limited opportunities to build wealth. She didn't take him home, likely because home is a small apartment. He clearly was impressed by Cindy's place, and I thought you could see him envisioning himself spending time there. I also think Mel is not an emotionally generous guy, and was not inclined to take on Debbie's issues stemming from her painful past. And no demonstrated ability to build a successful long-term relationship by age 65 is a pretty big red flag. I would love to see Debbie meet a great guy, but something is up there. I hope taking a risk like she did here helps her open up more to other romantic possibilities, and build an audience for her business. Some ladies just have bad lucky and/or are bad pickers. I think he enjoys Peg's fun, energetic personality but he doesn't seem attracted to her. She's an attractive lady, but does look older than the others and we know he cares about youthfulness. I think, from Mel's perspective, Cindy is the whole package (she's also the youngest, at 60) and they'll wind up engaged. Will it last? Doubtful, but who knows.
I do think Debbie sharing that extremely heavy baggage on the home visit was a questionable strategy. But perhaps she thought it would explain why she has not paired off. I think it probably ruined the vibe.
Mel is not a high EQ kind of guy, seems quite limited. I worry about anyone who ends up with him tbh.
