As someone that went through The 2017 girls ECNL to girls DA saga with my oldest the girls ECNL to GA drama is starting to feel exactly the same. The big difference with GA is the change is slow motion compared to before. I'm positive it's because there's no "free soccer" incentive with GA. If a group of top ECNL clubs switch to GA as a group ECNL is over. That was the "last straw" so to speak when clubs started going to DA in mass.
Hard to compare that, as after year 1 & year 2 of the GDA clubs flocked back to ECNL. You are correct, if a big chunk of the top ECNL clubs were to go to the GA there would be a shift, but I personally do not see it happening. There will be a constant trading of lower clubs for years I think. ECNL could still end this whole thing if they just add Tophat, Lou Fusz, City & maybe cup/nefc.
The reason all the girls clubs went back to ECNL after DA is because they knew ECNL worked + generated revenue. GA at the time was new and unknown. The reason the boys clubs went to MLSN after DA blew up (not ECNL) is because MLS got involved an tagged a few youth clubs as academies with free soccer. But all other MLSN clubs functioned just like ECNL ie pay to play. This is why MLSN worked after DA blew up but GA didn't (initially) GA saw what was going on and just copied everything girls ECNL was doing as a business. Now, from a league and events perspective (not the clubs involved) it's 1to1 with ECNL. Add in that MLSN is now partnered with GA or put more bluntly if you're a MLSN club you'll soon be forced to play your girls in GA. You can see where all this is going.
