100 -200 years ago, most of the general population was illiterate.  In fact, for most of human history, reading and writing was confined to the elite.  That's how this concept of prescriptive grammar even came about.

Grammar and spelling are fluid.  They change and adapt.

No, we won't be reduced to grunts and pointing.  We'll just spell a few words differently than we do now, and some of the archaic grammar rules (that never really made sense anyway) will go away and new ones will take their place.

So relax.  It's going to be okay.  Social media won't kill language or grammar.  It will make people into annoying narcissistic posers constantly in search of an audience.  But we'll still be communicating ;) [/quote]
