Amazing how quickly this thread has quietened down now that it’s clear the shooter voted for Trump. Yesterday it was the top thread most of the day as MAGA trolls furiously pushed back any suggestions that he might be from their side or had mental health issues. I don’t know if it was just a handful of people promoting MAGA talking points, but they were relentless.
I'm MAGA and early on I said it was irrelevant who he voted for. The guy clearly has issues. And I thought he was probably a big lefty, but again, it's stupid to point to a madman and say "this person represents everyone with those beliefs." You're either someone who believes political violence is justified or you're not. Most people do not believe in political violence. But there are people on both the right and the left who believe it. A democrat who isn't violent has a lot more in common with a MAGA who isn't violent than either have with the militants in their own party. I think the real issue is when people wink and nod at the violent people in their own party while claiming that there's no violence. Yes there is. On both sides. (Yes. Both. SiDeS.)
It is irrelevant who he voted for, but you have to be honest that the rhetoric from the right and the impunity that Trump and his administration are willing to resort to violence (ICE, the thugs who roughed up Senator Padilla, they guy who drove into the "no kings" rally in Charlotesville as examples from just the past couple of days) does not help return the country to settling issues at the ballot box and through debate, rather than inflame and foster more violence. It is core to MAGA and the project of the violence from the left is just that. Yes, there are bad actors on all sides, but the facts matter. A lot of the vioence coming out of the 2020 protests were right wingers using those protests to agitate. Look it up. I am not saying there are not bad actors on the left and also the anarchists - there are, but lets be honest, the MAGA leadership is all about projecting power through violence, it is core to the message so that people will be fearful and cower. I think we saw yesterday that Americans are not going to fall prey the way the Turks, Russians and Hugarians have. The country is too big.
I think it's natural to key in on perceived threats. I would write the same thing that you wrote, but about the left. I am legit worried about violence from the left. Just yesterday a man came into the gym, scowling and stalking around. Then I noticed he was wearing a shirt with "No Kings!" etc scrawled with a sharpie pen. And my instant reaction was fear, because the gym was basically empty and it was just me and my young son. Those kinds of instincts are real and biologically driven. But they still need to be balanced with reality. In my real life, I am friends with as many democrats as Republicans, and none of my democratic friends would dream of committing political violence. If you live in a bubble, it's really easy to convince yourself that the other side is evil. I'm not going to list all the many, many instances of left wing terrorism, such as the summer of 2020 in which downtowns were hollowed out after being set on fire. You may not call that terrorism, but anyone on the right would. It's up to decent people to fight against that kind of thing regardless of the alleged motivations.
95% of American adults are in one of the two political bubbles. They only receive and process half-truths that support their bias. This being said 99.9999% of American are peaceful and loving people who would never harm a fly. This includes the babbling idiot you saw in the gym lol.
This is complete crap. Less than a third of Americans are paying close attention to any political news at all. Remember how the most googled question on election day was “did Biden drop out?” [twitter]https://news.gallup.com/poll/513128/attention-political-news-slips-back-typical-levels.aspx[/twitter]
Excellent point. Only Democrats would be asking such a question. MAGA already knew who they were voting for.
Are you are OK with killing Democratic opponents? Because that is what you are supporting.
