Most private schools are a mix of DC, VA and MD residents. It is hard to compare acceptances between public schools that are 100% in-state and private schools that are a mixture of in-state and out of state.
Here is a RoVA data point... My rigorous prep school in RoVA is the top school in its area, and has never offered classes labeled "AP" or "Honors". Typically the smarter students will sit about 5-7 AP exams. Almost all students who take the AP exams get at least a 3, but across the graduating class AP results mostly are 4s and 5s. SAT scores are generally 1300+ for all students with lots of 1400+ and several 1500+. Almost all students are qualified VA in-state. School often sends 20-25% of students to UVa (in C'ville not Wise; matriculation not acceptances). It sends maybe 5-10 to W&M annually. Roughly 90-130 students graduate each year. No special relationships, but in-state admissions folks at most VA Publics know those students are well prepared for college. (Not going to answer any followups as I am already close to outing myself.)
